Todd Bodine Blurr

After attempting to stir the Fast Lap pot this evening, I turn my attention to a favorite subject here at the Thunder Lounge.

Defending Craftsman Truck Series champ Todd Bodine takes his act to the land of delta blues as the truckers hit Memphis Motorsports Park this week.

I admit to being a bit of a Bodine fan. Todd was a guest ON PIT ROW earlier this year and gave one of the best descriptions of the handling characteristics of the CoT that I have heard to date. Doesn’t make him a great driver and I’m sure that Luke is going to let me know why.

Bring it on Tex.

Shifting? We don’t need no stinkin’ shiftin’. We need Fast Laps!

Alltel Dodge and Ryan Newman

So we take a last sip of California Chardonnay and turn our thoughts to long straights and left turns….only.

Nice job by Juan Pablo Montoya becoming the first driver to start worse than thirteenth at Infineon Raceway and winning anyway. Too bad for Robby Gordon, who dominated the first half of the race and got caught out on pit strategy. Another good run by that team though. Tough luck too for Jamie Mac, who showed me that the last two qualifying performances at Sonoma were no fluke.

Speaking of no flukes - that Fast Lap last week was pretty good. At least it was if you enjoy the entertaining nature of Steve’s wacko opinions. Just like Juan Pablo, let’s go for two in a row. Remember, we want to use your best responses, offensive or defensive, on the next ON PIT ROW radio show!

1) Is Juan Pablo Montoya’s win at Infineon a surprise?

2) With so much past road racing experience at Roush Racing, why can’t they win a road course race?

3) Did TNT really think their “in car reporter” was going to work better than it did?

4) Was the decision to replace Aric Amorola with Denny Hamlin in the middle of the Busch Race the correct one?

Now we go to something completely different. Well, sort of. They will be driving those strange cars with the wingy things again, this time in New Hampsha’. Tryin’ their best to turn some Fast Laps.

The Fast Lap four corners go both ways this week

Robby Gordon at Sears Point

Carl Edwards broke the Chevy choke hold on the Nextel Cup, for one week anyway. Road course aces like Robby Gordon, Juan Pablo Montoya and Terry Labonte driving non-bow-ties make this week in the wine country another possible win for the “anything but a Chevy crowd”.

Of course Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Denny Hamlin are pretty good on the twisty bits too.

Drive fast, turn left…..and right, four times.

1) Where will Kyle “Rowdy” Busch end up?

2) Do you care?

3) According to DW–”Junior’s sponsor will be something to drink that doesn’t come in a red can”–what do you think?

4) Two falls out of three–Tony Stewart or David Gilliland?

Last week was one of the lamest Fast Laps I’ve ever been involved in. Let’s step it up people. We need meat for ON PIT ROW!

Can’t wait - Fast Laps in the Irish Hills

Mark Martin at MIS

Jeff Gordon gets the rain shortened win at the Pocono 265 with Rocket Ryan chewin’ on his heels at the final yellow flag.  The Hendrick Motorsports juggernaut continued in the hills of Pennsylvania.

Those HMS drivers haven’t faired all that well at the lightning fast two miler in Michigan’s beautiful Irish Hills.  In the last ten years, only Jeff Gordon is a winner, twice, for the Hendrick teams.

Ryan Newman has been about as hot as a driver can be for the last month and is a two time winner at M.I.S.  Roush pilots Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle are multi-time winners and always good on the two mile tracks.  Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin and Kurt Busch are past winners as well.

We’re following three flat, wet corners with four high banked fast ones.  Hold on.

1)  Should NASCAR consider using rain tires at its flat tracks and road courses?

2) Rumors have Dale Jarrett trying to get out of his contract with Michael Waltrip Racing.  Where might he go?

3)  Is it about time for NASCAR to throw a “competition yellow” at Hendrick Motorsports?

4)  Grade Kyle Petty after his first week in the TNT booth?

What? No Dale Jr. questions?  How are we gonna argue about….. never mind. I have faith in ya’all.  Put your thoughts up and be ready to defend them - and counter attack of course. This is The Fast Lap and we want to feature you - the good you and the bad you - ON PIT ROW this week.

Pocono’s about long fast straights and three flat corners

Denny Hamlin at Pocono Raceway

The worst thing about rain delays is it gives bloggers an extra day to write about anything but a race.  The best part is, one less day until the next race.  At least that’s the best part for NASCAR fans.  It’s a whole different story for the crews and teams, that lose a day out of an already too tight schedule of preparation for the next round.

Pocono has taken some hits in recent years and is often the first track mentioned when talk turns to taking away race dates from established venues.  I like the Long Pond, PA track for it’s unique shape and the different difficulties that it causes for crew chiefs.  That said, maybe one race would be enough, if you could replace a date with a Nashville or Iowa Speedway.

Whether racing at a triangle or not, we still give you four fast flat and hopefully trash-talk filled corners to navigate, so here goes.

1. Who would Budweiser pick as Junior’s successor?

2. Toyota is courting some established teams for next year - who might switch?

3. What was Bill France Jr.’s biggest effect on the sport his daddy started?

4.  Who’s better -  Krist Voda from Fox Sports or Suzi Kolber of ESPN?

Remember the best, or worst, of the responses will be featured ON PIT ROW this week.
