Pocono’s about long fast straights and three flat corners
by Charlie Turner
I'm Charlie Turner co-host of the syndicated, mostly NASCAR radio show On Pit Row. Thanks for stopping by OnPitRow.com and the Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie blog. Oh yeah, Steve is an idiot.

The worst thing about rain delays is it gives bloggers an extra day to write about anything but a race. The best part is, one less day until the next race. At least that’s the best part for NASCAR fans. It’s a whole different story for the crews and teams, that lose a day out of an already too tight schedule of preparation for the next round.
Pocono has taken some hits in recent years and is often the first track mentioned when talk turns to taking away race dates from established venues. I like the Long Pond, PA track for it’s unique shape and the different difficulties that it causes for crew chiefs. That said, maybe one race would be enough, if you could replace a date with a Nashville or Iowa Speedway.
Whether racing at a triangle or not, we still give you four fast flat and hopefully trash-talk filled corners to navigate, so here goes.
1. Who would Budweiser pick as Junior’s successor?
2. Toyota is courting some established teams for next year - who might switch?
3. What was Bill France Jr.’s biggest effect on the sport his daddy started?
4. Who’s better -  Krist Voda from Fox Sports or Suzi Kolber of ESPN?
Remember the best, or worst, of the responses will be featured ON PIT ROW this week.

10 I would look for someone young and looking (good and for a better sponser). I could see Scott Riggs as a viable candidate. He has what Bud is looking for. He is an up and comer and could be pared with Kasey Kahne in commercials. Or how about Kahne himself? hmmm.
2) Penske seems logical because of his ties with Toyota in the past and his real life car dealerships. Speculation has Joe Gibbs Racing, Toyota and Junior tied in one big knot. That–I don’t see happening.
3) Bill Jr.s biggest affect on the sport, in my mind, is his bringing RJ Reynolds and it’s Winston brand in as title sponsor of the series in 1971. Bill Jr. didn’t officially take over the reigns from Big Bil until the next year, bet he got one helluva start on a legacy.
4)Suzi by far. When paired with Rusty Wallace, it makes anyone’s game look better.
Just my thoughts–lets see if you can do better.
1) Um… Junior. Severing that relationship would kill the branding they’ve achieved. UPS would be (barely) in the top 35, but the brand and awareness with DJ was strong enough to walk with him and take the risk.
2) Zero big teams. Penske is under contract through 2008, and Gibbs would be insane to switch from Chevy.
3) Winston was big, no doubt. But, for something “officially” under his reign, I think I’m going to have to go with getting NASCAR fully covered on TV.
4) I’m not touching this one.
(the sound of knuckles cracking)
This is too easy.
1. Luke is right about the branding that Bud has built with Junior. Junior has the “it” that marketers and talent agents always mention when talking about stars. Jr. has an unpolished edge that works perfectly with Bud’s commercial formats and product. Who out there has a similar edge.? Whos else is a Brad Pitt or James Dean? Maybe nobody, but I’ll try Brian Vickers.
2.It will be Penske. There are too many connections business-wise. 2009 sounds just about right.
3.The biggest thing he did has to be the taking a regional sport to a national audience through his developement of NASCAR on TV. The every small sport and sports organization has a title sponsor. Don’t mean much if nobody sees it. The sponsor dough provided funds and ideas that made NASCAR prettier for the tube. But the broadcast of the show was the key.
4.Steve is all about style over substance. Here is another example. Suzi gets a slight edge in the eye candy department. Krista is a racin’ gal, knows her stuff and has earned her NASCAR stripes for the last three years on Speed TV. Kolber is pretty good on football. This ain’t football.
