The Brickyard Fast Lap

The Chicagoland Cup race was, predictably, not very exciting.  Tony Stewart and Jimmy Johnson pretty well had the field covered in their Chevies.  Once a blown tire took JJ out, in a big scary way,  Smoke only had Matt Kennseth to deal with.  No problem.

Jamie McMurray may have put too many nails in his Chase coffin to overcome.  The win at Daytona was big.  Following that with a 38th place this week might kill his hopes to Chase the final Nextel Cup.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn’t help his cause much either and consistent Ryan Newman is putting the heat on the #8.

The next week promises to be full of news conferences and sponsor announcements.  Just more blogger fodder.

You can try your hand at different lines for these four, fast corners while we wait with baited breath for news of the fate of the eight.

1)  Kyle Petty admitted during the TNT broadcast that the race was a snoozer.  What is worse, long green flag runs, or too many “competition” yellows??

2) If Coach Gibbs needed to be brought in to settle the Stewart/Hamlin war: would Henry Kissinger need to be on retainer if Rowdy Busch were added to the lineup?

3) Which deal will happen first, Rowdy’s new team announcement or Budweiser’s new spokes-model?

4)  When NASCAR announced that the CoT would go Full Time in 2008; should they have added a cookie cutter race to prep for next year?

I may add one more category to my personal rant here.  I am sick and tired of this Rowdy rubbish.  The only Rowdy I acknowledge is Clint Eastwood - and Kyle Busch ain’t Clint Eastwood.  Shrub, I can live with.  If he actually hits somebody - with something other that a car - and takes the consequenses like a man - maybe rowdy-like would work.  But I doubt it.

At any rate, jump on in and tell us what you think.  We used Luke’s opinions ON PIT ROW last week.  If we like what you contribute, we may use yours on this week’s show.

1- Unfortunately competition yellows have become expected during NASCAR races to keep the racing close. I have no problem for yellow being thrown everytime there is any form of debris on the track–regardless of how small. What I have a problem with is that it takes NASCAR 6 laps or more to find the item and get it off the track. If they are going to have these yellows; limit their length and once we have everyboby bunched up again–”Let’s go racin boys!”

2- Having Rowdy even considered for JGR is a joke. If they didn’t want Junior because of his beer sponsor, what makes them think that Rowdy’s personality is any less offensive.

3- I think Kyle (Rowdy) will sign with a team before the race at Indy this week. And I think that team is going to be DEI. Budweiser has a year to go on its contract with DEI also. I can see Rowdy, Bud and Teresa sending up that trial balloon to see if it has any air under it.

4- CoT–full time in ‘08–great move. But when NASCAR made that announcement they should have also made a change in this years CoT schedule and added at least one if not up to three cookie-cutter races. That would have given all the teams a head start on the entire 2008 season. Teams will now be looking to spend more money over the off season testing in conditions that are note totally represtative of race conditions. This means more money spent on less reliable information. NASCAR blew this one.

    1. I like the diversity of NASCAR Cup Series racing. That diversity includes door banging short tracks, four wide plate tracks, road courses and even fuel economy runs on super speedways that often feature long, passless green flag runs. I also like - yes like, comp cautions. I don’t flippin’ care if they find the “roll bar rubber” or not. Just tell me it was there and bunch the field. As for the length of the caution periods - just run all the commercials you can and save the air time for green flag action.

    2. You keep callin’ Kyle the Younger “Rowdy” and you’re going to need Henry the K to save your simple ass from me. Doesn’t matter anyway. Kyle ain’t goin’ to Gibbs. There’s a better chance of Andy Gibbs returning to the BGs. And I think he’s dead.

    3. Young Mr. Busch will announce his new team after Bud picks Evernham. What about in the NAPA #5 at DEI?

    4. With fully 1/3 of all Cup races contested on mile and a half speed bowls, I can’t believe they didn’t have one on the CoT schedule for this year. Steve actually had a good reason for this ON PIT ROW Tuesday. I just don’t remember what it was because I was too busy ignoring him.

    1) Mysterious unveiling of that dirty yellow laundry has no place in racing. Even as boring as it gets at times. Yeah, Chicago let me take a nap. That isn’t a bad thing.

Point: Fake yellows to better enhance the outcome or mold it are bullsh*t. If you ain’t running up front, build a better car.

    2) Since he won’t be headed to Gibbs, does it matter? That hen house is full.

    3) * Flips Quarter *… Bush’s Announcement.

    4) Yes, absolutely. Granted, it has nothing to do with testing and money. The teams would still be going to Kentucky anyway. Which, with mention of that dirty name, is why there won’t ever be a cup race there. If it gets a date (which it won’t), then where are these teams going to test? By refusing them a date (which they should) they’re silently placing a blessing on Cup tests at the track.

But, the key here is race conditions. Talladega isn’t much help for the cookies, and the closest these boys are going to get (unless it’s changed) is the run at Darlington. OK, not much help there either, really.

NASCAR should make the move, and soon, to add a COT race at a cookie track. Be it Charlotte, Texas, or Homestead.

I think Charlotte would be cutting it close, as there are probably teams out there already or getting ready to begin initial preps for it. After all, it’s only 2 1/2 months away.

Texas wouldn’t be a bad option, and I’m sure Bruton wouldn’t mind opening it up a day early for a test session. More concession sales, right? Not to mention, more entertainment while we toss back them beverages at the Lounge. ;)
Homestead would be my 3rd overall choice, mainly because of the graduated banking. It’s less representative of the other cookies, other than Vegas.

    Than again… there’s always Hotlanta. :)

I vote for Texas. Then I vote for the ON PIT ROW sponsors’s association to send Steve and I to Texas to sample the Thunder Lounge, I mean to cover the debut of the “ugly little freakin’ horned toad” at the Texas speed bowl. By the way Luke, we think that you should take that Lounge on the road. Michigan would be a good spot for a barbeque.

I think we’d have a blast with you two freaks adding to the mix.

As for Michigan, user declines comment at this time.

Got something to say?
