Can Tony Stewart Fast Lap the field again at Pocono?

I'm Charlie Turner co-host of the syndicated, mostly NASCAR radio show On Pit Row. Thanks for stopping by OnPitRow.com and the Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie blog. Oh yeah, Steve is an idiot.

Two in a row for the Smokester and heading to a Joe Gibbs Racing stronghold. I like Stewart’s chances at a three-peat in the green mountains of eastern PA.Â
Speaking of smoke - Â maybe this week some of it will clear and we’ll know whether Kyle the younger Busch will be Tony’s newest team-mate and which Pepsi product will adorn Dale Jr.’s ride and souvies.
Or maybe we’ll just get another terrific race, like the last two. The odds of that at the Pennsylvania triangle aren’t great. It seems like three fast corners and three long straights stretch it out just a bit too much.
So try our four fast corners instead. And don’t be shy about telling whomever else answers these missives how much they missed the point.
1)Â Did NASCAR make a mistake by opening pit road for pit stops, on lap 137, with Junior sitting prone in the middle of pit road?
2) Was there anything to the “love tap” by Kevin Harvick on the back straight after the race; or was it really a congratulatory bump??
3) Will the merger of Robert Yates Racing with Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing pave the way for Sebastien Bourdais to move to NASCAR?
4)Â Grade ESPN’s first race back in the Cup Series.
Four corners - 100 words or less each. It’s the Fast Lap blog. We’re looking for different points of view to use ON PIT ROW. Join the party.

Heh… “Someone” must be a chicken. I’ll take the first whack at it.
1) Shit yes. How dumb do you have to be? It wasn’t covered real well as far as how he got there. Unless cars were already coming, and he all of a sudden died after they were already coming down, then I’ll vote this for the dumbest call of the season.
2) Both, probably. Let’s call it a congratulatory “thanks for knocking me out of competing with you” bump. Not that it would be a bad thing, it was just a love tap. I much preferred the laugh I got when Junior told his spotter to relay to Hamlin that if he didn’t chill out, he was going to park him. That was funny.
3) It could, if he wanted to. Does he want to, is the question. Thus far, it doesn’t seem like he does.
4) A-. Better than TNT, but there is always room for improvement. Couple minor flaws, but nothing out of the ordinary I guess. It was on par with the rest, but to me ESPN/ABC should be above the rest. They have the roots, and know how to get it done. They just need to knock the dust off for the Cup series.
Chicken this, cowboy!
1. In hindsight, the call was wrong, for sure. At the time, and I re-watched the tape again last night, it probably looked to the officials as though Jr. was going to make the garage, upon entering the pit lane. He seemed to stop the car himself, rather than run out of momentum. Made for some interesting camera shots though, as the rest of the pack entered the pits.
2. Without being able to read Happy’s mind, I would say that it was congrantulatory. But what do I know.
3. I’m hearing that SeaBass is heading for the second seat at Toro Rosso in F1. It’s a shame though. We lose the opportunity to have a great nick-name and a Frenchman in the Cup series. Mais non.
4. I gave the broadcast a B ON PIT ROW. I thought the whole package was surprisingly good. Suzi Kolber was better than most of the eye candy. Rusty seemed to be in his element finally, the graphic presentations were top notch and Tim Brewer’s garage segments were very cool. I even liked the “visible air” stuff, though I know it isn’t real. With commentary from a driver like Wallace explaining what is happening aero-wise, the goofy blue and reds swirls work like a tele-strator. It worked for me. Let’s see if they B-team it for races less visible than the Brick.
Aight, Hoss.
1) I’ll give ya that. I haven’t seen enough replays of anything prior to him sitting there and cars swerving all over.
2) Even if it was more than an “atta boy”, would Harvick tell NASCAR (or the media for that matter) it was? Um, no. So we’ll never really know.
3) Would we really need a Frenchman in NASCAR anyway? Mmmm… Bologna Burgers on a croissant. I’ll pass, and that whole Jean Girard thing just scares me even more, Ricky.
4) Eye candy. Speed and ESPN have it in the pits, and what makes it even sweeter is they know their sh*t!
And, “someone” is still being a chicken. Must be a Stewart fan in hiding!
Chicken? Who you callin’ chicken Pilgrim? Move over–here comes some sanity.
1– This has to rank right up there with NASCAR’s biggest boners of all time. As much as they swooped in and changed the running back to the caution rule to give us the “lucky dog”, you would think theywould make damn sure PIT ROW was clear before opening it up for pit stops. NASCAR gets in trouble when they do too much thinking. Them thinking that Junior would make it off of PIT ROW before being sure was pathetic. Whoever made that call should be fined $25,000 and docked 25 officials points.
2– Happy said it was a “howdy doody”. It seems funny that NASCAR would even question it and call him to the trailer. They must have thought that something smelled like yesterday’s newspaper. I think Happy just wanted to remind Smoke that he wasn’t gonna get stepped on.
3–Art imitates life, or is it life imitates art–Jean Girard in real life would be interesting. Why else would N/H/L want in? Haas–yeah I know-he just wants to be in NASCAR so bad he’d do about anything. Girard—errrr Bourdais could make more money being the 2nd driver on a last place F1 team, but if he ever wanted to win something maybe NASCAR would look good to him.
4– I give ESPN a sold B-. I liked some of the things they did. I didn’t like the glowing puck re-incarnation though. That was a bit hokey. A great job by Rusty. He definately raised his game for the first cup race. Hopefully they will build on a solid start. More of my views on this at “Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie”.
There ya go Colonel Sanders.
