California Fast Laps

The Thunder Valley Fast Laps didn’t disappoint fans on Friday as the Busch Series sprint race had the boys bangin’ and hangin’ for the whole show. Some seemed shocked that the long 500 lap Cup show was more staid. It was Bristol folks, and that’s what happens when you have three races left before the NASCAR playoffs - The Chase for the Nextel Cup. It’s all about being there for the last round of pit stops - with most of your sheet metal intact.

Great result for Carl Edwards - as he, Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart continue to amass Chase bonus points to keep the Hendricks boys in sight.

And how is it that certain people just seem to make the right moves? George Gillette buys Evernham Motorsports when it looks like that team has no clue - and two weeks later Kasey Kahne nearly sweeps one of the biggest weekends of the season. Might be a reason he’s a billionaire.

We’re going to the home of the California girls this week. It’s different out there, right Marc? Try surfin’ these four fast ones, dudes - and dudettes.

1) Will a Mark Martin/Aric Almirola tag team effort keep the fans from booing the #8 next year?

2) Jacques Villeneuve will most likely join Juan Pablo as non-US born drivers in Cup cars in 2008. Is this what NASCAR had in mind with its diversity program?

3) Should NASCAR come up with an appeals process during a race to keep from making mistakes like happened to Rowdy in the Busch race?

4) Will there be any changes to the top 12 with 2 races to go or are we set?

We’re looking for input. It’s time for the Fast Lap ON PIT ROW.

We’re still waiting to see if NASCAR can get a race off at Michigan this week. 50 miles from MIS it’s still rainin’ at 11:00 pm Monday night and the race is now scheduled for 10:00 am Tuesday. Paul Simon did a song called “Slip slidin’ away”, and it might fit here.

When the race does run, it might be a good one. Although Jeff Gordon and Biffle have the front row in Chevy and Ford, the Dodges were strong in practice and qualifying. Both Evenham cars were fast and Bobby Labonte is on row two. Even the MWR Camrys of Waltrip and Reutiman are up front. Multiple cars from each make in the first six rows. Nice.
Rain tires anyone?

While you wait out the rain, try sliding around on these four slick corners - 100 drops words or less please.

1) Ricky Rudd is retiring. Is he a Hall-of-Famer?

2) For the absolute last time - who deserves to have the #8?

3) There were only four caution flags in the Busch race at MIS on Saturday. Was it boring?

4) Also for the last time. Sprint/Nextel or AT&T/Cingular - who should prevail?

We really do use the content from this blog ON PIT ROW. I also happen to have more fun over here, slapping and getting slapped around, than is fair, for free. Join in. It’s the Fast Lap at the Thunder Lounge. Go ahead - make my day.

Go fast.  Turn left.  That’s more like it.

It’s hard to complain about road racing when NASCAR gives you consecutive weekends of exciting, car spinning, driver shoving, name calling action like we had at Montreal and the Glen.

After all of the road course warrior talk for weeks, it was Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart - renaissance warriors - taking the checkers.

I love road courses.  But Michigan International Speedway seems - to me at least - like the perfect NASCAR track.  Try these four flat-out lefties on for size, bubba.

1) Why isn’t NASCAR more concerned about the Montoya-Harvick scrap during the race?

2) Will the expected move of Joe Gibbs Racing  to Toyota get the car maker to the next level?

3) After five exceptional road course races, is it time for NASCAR to add more to their Cup and Busch (GN) schedules?

4) Why is so much made of a NASCAR driver saying a swear word, that could be heard on most Second Grade playgrounds, during a TV interview.

Say good bye to Patrick, P J and that Fellows fellow.  It’s super-speedway time and the Irish Hills of Michigan is the place.

Every time I heard the TV or radio guys calling a Kurt Busch pit stop on Sunday, they were saying “four Goodyear Racing Eagles, two cans of Sunoco Racing Fuel and…no adjustments”.

This was not a good omen for Dale Earnhardt Jr or any of the other prentenders at Pocono Raceway.  If it hadn’t been for NASCAR and their happy flag wavers,  Busch might have lapped the field.

The points for winning and leading the most laps pushed Busch past Dale Jr for the final spot in NASCAR’s golden twelve and further tightend the Race to the Chase, with five races to go.  Earnhardt trails by only seven points.

The other big news of the weekend came from Robby Gordon’s stand off with NASCAR officials at the Montreal Busch Series road race.  Happy Harvick was the survivor there for the victory.

Of the two races, the Busch race was far more exciting and maybe bodes well for this week as both series will turn Fast Laps on the legendary track at Watkins Glen.

There’s no Thunder Lounge at The Glen.  There is however the famous Seneca Lodge.  The Lodge has been a racer’s hangout since way back in the day.  You never know who you might catch there, quaffing a cold one.  Think about that while you maneuver through these four twisty corners.

1) What should NASCAR have done differently, if anything, during the end of the Busch race in Montreal?

2) Should NASCAR re-evaluate the length of some of their races–especially at Pocono?

3) Five of the seven cautions at Pocono were for single car spins that didn’t hit anything.  Was NASCAR trying to make a race out of this snoozer, or was there definite concern for safety?

4) Who deserves more credit; Pat Tryson for getting Kurt back to victory lane or Tony Eury Jr. for the “Magic Shock” replacement.

Are you tight or loose?  Can you hit your apexes and exit smoothly,  setting up for the next challenge?  We’ll see.  Remember, someone may try to run you off your preferred line.  It’s the Fast Lap and it’s ON PIT ROW every week.
