I'm Charlie Turner co-host of the syndicated, mostly NASCAR radio show On Pit Row. Thanks for stopping by OnPitRow.com and the Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie blog. Oh yeah, Steve is an idiot.

Go fast.  Turn left.  That’s more like it.

It’s hard to complain about road racing when NASCAR gives you consecutive weekends of exciting, car spinning, driver shoving, name calling action like we had at Montreal and the Glen.

After all of the road course warrior talk for weeks, it was Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart - renaissance warriors - taking the checkers.

I love road courses.  But Michigan International Speedway seems - to me at least - like the perfect NASCAR track.  Try these four flat-out lefties on for size, bubba.

1) Why isn’t NASCAR more concerned about the Montoya-Harvick scrap during the race?

2) Will the expected move of Joe Gibbs Racing  to Toyota get the car maker to the next level?

3) After five exceptional road course races, is it time for NASCAR to add more to their Cup and Busch (GN) schedules?

4) Why is so much made of a NASCAR driver saying a swear word, that could be heard on most Second Grade playgrounds, during a TV interview.

Say good bye to Patrick, P J and that Fellows fellow.  It’s super-speedway time and the Irish Hills of Michigan is the place.

1– NASCAR has been looking for some personality for a while. The JimmyJohnsonizing of NASCAR is starting to run its course-even with NASCAR officials. Even NASCAR’s John Darby said’ “It was cool as hell.”

2– Joe Gibbs Racing is exactly what Toyota needs. They started in the NASCAR world with wat was available; not with teams they wanted. Every team needs a #1 and this will give Team Toyota a true #1.

3– I’ve been banging this drum for years. All the time, energy and resourses that are allotted for 2 races could be better utilized if spread over 3 or 4 races. Find the right venues and it has been proven this year that road courses can deliver some otf the best races of the year.

4– NASCAR needs to lighten up and let the boys be boys. Every driver, crewman and suit knows what can be said and can’t. They are big boys and need to weigh the pluses and minuses of their actions. If NASCAR is worried, them demand that all interviews are run on tape or delay.

That is what I would have said on the air if my time hadn’t been stolen.

Mornin’ ladies, sorry to be out of the loop and leave you in an emotionally depressed state without my usual commentating flair, but I had to book it out of town unexpectedly for most of the week.

Let’s get to it, play a little catch up, and see if I can pick on Steve. (Like that’s hard.)

    1) Well, can’t pick on Steve with this one. It’s spot on. No harm, no foul, and it was cool as hell. If they would have been throwing punches, maybe. But they weren’t, and it’ll be in the highlight reels for years to come. Although their “consistency” isn’t shown here, and I’m sure Mr. Gordon would like a refund from last season.

    2) Nope, not on this one either. JGR would be an asset to Toyota. With the COT being pretty much the same all around, Gibbs doesn’t lose much on that side. Engines are a little bit different, but there could be one in the back room being looked over already.

What does come into question is the method of operation that Toyota wants amongst its teams. I’m not sure JGR would be willing to open up the “notes” across the board, and share information like they are expected to with MWR and BDR like they would between the #11 and #20.

    Then again, who knows.

    3) I’ve always been of the mindset that there should definitely be one in the Chase. If we’re determining a true Champion during these final 10 races, then by all means it should be a cross-sectional representation of the first 26 races.

What would have to go, I’m not sure. But, there could be a few options. A track would have to lose a date, and I’ll be first in line for the 2nd California date to be dropped. Then, move Kansas to Mothers Day, and put Darlington where it deserves to be, but under the lights. :D
Then pick from one of the fine road course venues available. There are some really beautiful courses out there, that also would provide a really nice show.

    4) Your time was stolen, Steve? Is that how they are explaining it to you now? (I knew I could get one in.)

Seriously, I can understand the whole “family” thing, but c’mon now. All the people bitching and moaning say worse in their day to day activities. Run a 5-10 second delay, and get off this “Oh my God, he said what!?” high horse.

It shouldn’t become a free-for-all, but Mr. Roboto is dead.

I appologize for being the last to post-and the first to post so late-to the blog that I founded. I’m also the one bitching and begging for action here and I dropped the freakin’ ball this week. Enough whining - I sound like a combo of Rusty/Jeffy and Steve. That could have been a band in the sixties - if Jerry Lewis’ kid had been named Steve. OK here goes.

    1. You’re mailing it in here Stev-o. You make it sound like you believe NASCAR set this up to “un-JimmyJohnsonize” their plat toy. Fact is, N-Car is lucky to have a few drivers with balls - like Harvick and Montoya - who could care less if Brian “the lesser” wants to slap their hands for sayin’ bad words or slappin’ sissies. The fact that Harvick is still pissed, is good for the sport. So is JPM’s attitude that “Happy can stuff it.”

    2. There are 3 reasons that a Gibbs/Toyota agreement would move Toyota up - a couple notches. 1. Tony Stewart
    2. Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch
    3. Tony Stewart - again

    3. Steve - you poor, delusional sap. The fact that this year, we happened to have good, close, competitive road races in Cup was an anomaly. Does not usually happen that way. The reason to have more road races is not because the races are good. It is because the races are good tests - of the drivers. One more road course - and Luke is right - in the Chase. The Lakefront airport track in Cleveland would be the best venue for a race. It’s wide and TV friendly. Not gonna happen though. Let’s run ‘em at Rattlesnake Luke!

    4. Steve, I stole your time to save you from yourself. Go to hell. I think drivers that swear in interviews should be killed.

Luke–what are you doing on Tuesday nights. It would be nice to have someone around who has some sense.

With enough notice, I can pull just about anything off Steve.

    @ Charlie…

You know, there’s a pretty nice road course about 45 minutes from here. It was one of the ones F1 was looking at to replace Indy.

Granted, I’m not sure about the facilities, but the course is pretty nice. Pity I can’t remember the name of it.

Got something to say?
