California Fast Laps

The Thunder Valley Fast Laps didn’t disappoint fans on Friday as the Busch Series sprint race had the boys bangin’ and hangin’ for the whole show. Some seemed shocked that the long 500 lap Cup show was more staid. It was Bristol folks, and that’s what happens when you have three races left before the NASCAR playoffs - The Chase for the Nextel Cup. It’s all about being there for the last round of pit stops - with most of your sheet metal intact.

Great result for Carl Edwards - as he, Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart continue to amass Chase bonus points to keep the Hendricks boys in sight.

And how is it that certain people just seem to make the right moves? George Gillette buys Evernham Motorsports when it looks like that team has no clue - and two weeks later Kasey Kahne nearly sweeps one of the biggest weekends of the season. Might be a reason he’s a billionaire.

We’re going to the home of the California girls this week. It’s different out there, right Marc? Try surfin’ these four fast ones, dudes - and dudettes.

1) Will a Mark Martin/Aric Almirola tag team effort keep the fans from booing the #8 next year?

2) Jacques Villeneuve will most likely join Juan Pablo as non-US born drivers in Cup cars in 2008. Is this what NASCAR had in mind with its diversity program?

3) Should NASCAR come up with an appeals process during a race to keep from making mistakes like happened to Rowdy in the Busch race?

4) Will there be any changes to the top 12 with 2 races to go or are we set?

We’re looking for input. It’s time for the Fast Lap ON PIT ROW.

    Turn 1:
Yes, to some extent. No matter what they say or do though, even with Junior making the call in the media to back off TEI, there’s going to be some fans with heavy resentment and a mind to waste a good beer.

    Turn 2:
Well, not quite, but you can bet one thing: They sure don’t, and won’t, mind all of the press coverage that will come along with it. The question is, in my mind anyway, is this more of a publicity and excuse move, or one that can pay some dividends?

Jeremy Mayfield isn’t the worlds greatest driver, but he can run pretty decent in good equipment. That being said, the #36 has been a flop in the results table. Those guys are busting their butts like anyone else, but the results just aren’t there.

Bringing in JV looks to be a PR move, as well as a foundation for excuses when there aren’t any results on the table. Along with that, is the shot in the dark that he might actually do some good, but that would be a side benefit initially.

    Turn 3:
Whether you like the Shrub or not, you can’t deny he got hosed. When NASCAR makes a big “boo boo” like this, you can bet that by the time the next green flag rolls, there is some sort of procedure in place to make sure they don’t look like clowns again. Whether they tell the world what that procedure is or not is another question.

    Turn 4:
There could be, but those guys that could make a downward move are going to be walking on egg shells the next 2 weeks. The best scenario that could come from this whole deal would be this:

Fontana is a snoozer anyway. If the Chase field is set after this Sunday, watch out at Richmond. There won’t be anything to lose, for anyone, for the second time this season. Last time being the All Star Race at Charlotte.

That would make Richmond a free-for-all, without much consequence, and everything to gain for the next week at Louden. Ten points is ten points, and if you run second you’re the first loser.

If there’s a spot or two to be contested come Richmond, it may even end up the same as the couple folks with a chance will be hanging it all out.

    Guess we’ll see.

My legs are still a bit wobbly, but my sea legs are coming back - being Lake Erie sea legs, not Sailor of the Seven Seas legs like yours and Marc’s Luke. Better late than never, I hope.

Turn 1. Although Mark Martin is, as David Poole said ON PIT ROW, about as boo-proof as they come, even he won’t stop the Red Army. Just wait until that #8 passes the #(fill in your favorite guess here). Hell, I might even boo.

Turn 2. No. Let’s be frank. NASCAR is looking for “people of color” to make it in high visablity positions - like race car driver, crew chief, etc. Strides have been made in over-all employment, by reports. But other than JPM and Aric Almirola, and to some extent, Bill Lester, progress has been slow. Maybe Lewis Hamilton will get bored with F1.

Turn 3. No. There is no crying in baseball and no instant replay in auto racing.

Turn 4. well, I have the advantage of answering this after the California race but even so, I said Tuesday on the show that there was no way and I still feel that way. Wait ’til next year Junior. You too Ryan.

1- You could put Mother Theresa (the nun) in the #8 next year and she would get booed. It will take at least half a year for the booing to stop–even if then. Junior fans will only care that Junior is NOT in the car.

2- NASCAR has truely dropped the ball on their real diversity program. They have a hispanic and will probably have a Nor of the Borderer but nothing along the female or black lines they were hoping for. Find a woman or black who can bring a $30 million sponsor with themand you’ll be amazed how quickly the program will turn around.

3- Just get it right. That is all I ask. NASCAR runs so many unnecessary caution laps anyway–run a couple of more and look at the flipping video. JUST GET IT RIGHT!

4- I think there are definately too many distractions for Junior to make the chase. Anyone else doesn’t have a snowballs chance. Sorry Jr. fans–it ain’t gunna happen.

Um, duh. That’s pretty easy to point out with one race to go. :P
I’ll take pictures for ya. Drop me an email with requests.
