If I read my morning stats pages correctly, the top six Nextel Cup Chasers are separated by 16 points. The top four are spread by FOUR LOUSY POINTS! Best of all, the order changes more often than the rumors about Dale Earnhardt Jr’s number/sponsor. Oh, right - that’s over, finally.
What will we do this week with no press conferences? I know. Let’s argue about these four Fast Lap questions.
1)Â Should NASCAR penalties be more more severe during the Chase than during the regular season?
2) Should someone have physically kept Kyle Petty from visiting Denny Hamlin’s garage during the race?
3) Drivers are still hating on the CoT. Is it basically flawed–or, still, just in need of some off-season tweaking?
4) Is the Monster Mile too much of a monster to be included in The Chase schedule?
Nothing cookie-cutter like about those four corners. The Nextel Cuppers are headed to Kansas and one of those mile and a half tracks that fans seem to either love or hate. How about you? Throw that opinion in as a free-bee  with your Fast Lap answers and we may just use it in our bloggers segment ON PIT ROW.

September 17, 2007 11:09 am CDT 3 CommentsDid you see anyone predict that Clint Bowyer would contend for the Nextel Cup Championship? I didn’t see it, hear it or write it. Never the less, Bowyer won the first leg of the NASCAR playoffs in dominating fashion at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and jumped right into the middle of contention talk.
Speaking of talk - there will be plenty this week with the two high profile - high interest - press conferences scheduled for Kasey Kahne’s new sponsorship deal on Tuesday and Dale Earnhardt Jr’s long awaited announcements, Wednesday.Â
Then we get to race again. Dover Downs is a favorite of mine. It is both quirky and traditional. I expect good, close, CoT  racing and more Chevy dominance.Â
I also expect some spirited sparring over these four, fender banging corners of this week’s Fast Lap.
1. Should lame duck drivers be allowed to test with their new teams at Atlanta later THIS year?
2. Is Tony Stewart’s reluctance to talk about a contract extension because of concentrating on the Chase or due to the Toyota deal at JGR?
3. Does Clint Bowyer now have a chance to win the Chase or was this a one-off win?
4. Should Kentucky Speedway be allowed to buy New Hampshire Motor Speedway and move a race to Kentucky?
Answer early (or late) and often and be prepared to defend you turf. This is the Fast Lap and it ain’t a tennis match. We’re looking for the best, most insightful content to use ON PIT ROW. Bring it on!
Life in the Fast Lap lane is good for Jimmy Johnson

September 10, 2007 9:35 am CDT 4 CommentsThere is no better looking race than a NASCAR night race at Richmond International Raceway. Best camera angles and lighting on the circuit. You could really see the contrast as the smoke let loose from Dale Earnhardt Junior’s motor. Why did this feel like the last race of the #8 Bud team? There are ten to go, after-all and they’ll be running them. Saturday just seemed like the climax for little “E” and this part of his career. The rest is just killing time….and more press conferences.
The Chase is here. Can anyone in a non-Chevy win this thing? Jimmy Johnson looks as primed as can be to win consecutive championships for the first time since his team-mate and chief rival - Jeff Gordon - pulled it off years ago.
Are you one of the Tony Stewart fans that just can’t get over Smoke driving a Toyota next year? Check the calender folks. It’s 2007 not 1947.   I could see the anger if he switched to Ford - Ford drivers beat Chevies sometimes - but what has Toyota done?Â
1) Did Richmond replace Bristol as the best short track night race?
2) Which open-wheel defector will be more successful through the final 10 Cup races–Sam Hornish or Dario Franchitti?
3) Which rumor is more plausible; Gilett-Evernham Motorsports signing Patrick Carpentier or GEM merging with Petty Enterprises?
4) Would you take the 3 Hendrick cars or “the rest of the Chase field”, if you were betting on the 2007 Champion?
Four fast turns for your debating pleasure. Remember the rules - 100 words or less - unless your slamming other commenters in which case the wraps are off. It’s the Fast Lap at the Thunder Lounge. If you’re good enough - or bad enough - we’ll use your stuff ON PIT ROW.
NASCAR’s Race to the Chase comes down to Fast Laps on my favorite track

September 3, 2007 11:38 am CDT 4 Comments500 miles in 100 plus degrees heat at California Speedway is NASCAR’s version of the Dakar Rally.
Jimmy Johnson won the thing and if that surprised you - well, you must be Steve. Give Dale Junior credit. Earnhardt Jr hung it out all night. He was so close to the wall for so long that I question his judgement - when a slip would have removed doubt about making the Chase. Nicely done.
Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch look like Cup contenders. Kudos to Brian Vickers in the Camry and Bobby Labonte in the #43.
And now, on to Richmond. What a great race track. Hopefully this time, mother nature will let the thing go as scheduled. Earnhardt Jr still has a mathmatical chance to make the Cup playoffs and Happy Harvick is holding on for dear life.
While you wait, try these four fast flat lefties. They come quick on a one miler.
1. Will Joe Gibbs Racing switching to Toyotas in 2008 affect their Chase in 2007?
2. If Goodyear sets minimum tire pressures, should NASCAR enforce it’s use?
3. Should there be any concern over ownership of teams moving away from traditional racing roots?
4. Will the timing of the final Junior announcements vary depending on whether he makes the Chase or not?
This is a big week in NASCAR-land. The Gibbs presser and the Chase clincher. We still need your input ON PIT ROW. Take your shot but don’t be surprised if someone shoots back. It’s the nature of the Fast Lap.
