There is no off-season for Fast Laps

Last weekend was quiet - too quiet. It was one of only the dozen or so a year without some kind of NASCAR race to watch, or hear or smell.
Neither Jeffy nor Jimmy beat your favorite last Sunday. Nobody cheated or threatened to punch anybody for some transgression - real or imagined - that occurred on the track.
Rusty Wallace didn’t make you mad. ESPN was back in college football mode, where it seems they belong. You can’t even complain about - or laugh at - the Big Banquet yet.
Many of the regular TV and radio shows centered on racing have gone dark for the “off season”. Even the racing writers have quieted down.
But not the Fast Lap blog. Here are four fast, tight ones to keep you warm as the first snows of a short (we hope) winter start falling here in the great Midwest.
1)Â Should NASCAR set and/or employ the broadcast teams for its race broadcasts?
2) Car of Tomorrow or Old Car?
3) Who was the MVP on the 48 team?
4) Junior in 2008–over or under 4 wins?
ON PIT ROW will be around all year - we have no stinkin’ off season - and we could use your comments on the show. So fire away and then listen Thursday nights on RaceTalkRadio.com to see if you made the cut.
Jimmy Johnson runs more Fast Laps than the field

November 20, 2007 11:56 am CST 2 CommentsWell wasn’t that exciting? Jimmy Johnson won the 2007 Nextel Cup Championship and Homestead-Miami Speedway. Now if only this paint would dry.
Actually, for me being neither a Johnson lover or hater, I was uncomfortable for the guy when he was running around mid-pack, sometimes three wide. He and crew chief Chad Knauss were in position for the all-time greatest give-a-way had something untoward happened. And stuff was happening all over the place. Johnny Sauter lost it seemingly all by hisown self, taking two others - Brian Vickers and someone else - along with him. Tony Stewart backed into the wall unaided as well.
In the end though, Johnson made it home and put an exclamation point on the last half of the Chase to the Cup. He stomped it good.
We may have to find our Fast Laps on the snowmobile circuit for a few weeks, but that won’t stop us.
As Larry Mac says; ” Pull those belts up real tight” and try these four, Car of Tomorrow friendly left turns on for size.
1) Did you like the duel burnout of Johnson and Kenseth after the race?
2) Was the Kasey Kahne incident at Homestead the beginning of the new tougher Budman image?
3) How will Matt Kenseth do in 2008 without Robbie Reiser as his crew chief?
4) Will Jimmie Johnson three-peat?
It’s getting chilly up here in the Midwest. But unlike most of the NASCAR shows available during the season, ON PIT ROW doesn’t stop when the racing season does. We’ll be here every week with the “Fastest Two Hours on Radio” and so will the Fast Lap blog at the Thunder Lounge. We could use you input during the show.
Like the radio announcer says; “Be there!”.
Fast Laps in Florida are all that remain

November 12, 2007 1:02 pm CST 2 CommentsThey say it isn’t over until the fat lady sings - that it ain’t over ’til it’s over. Where’s Stevie Nicks when you need her?Â
I know, Jeff Gordon still has a mathematical chance of catching Jimmy Johnson and capturing the last Nextel Cup Championship. This isn’t about arithmetic folks. Watching Johnson the last four weeks could deflate Al Gore at a PETA convention. It’s over.
Maybe someone different could win a race for a change though - like Smoke Stewart or somebody in a Ford. How about one of the Busch brothers - it is Florida after-all?
Maybe Dale Earnhardt Jr will make all happy -  steal one of Truex Jr’s cars -  and thwart the evil desires of Broomhilda.Â
I need a drink.  But first take a cruise on the multi-tiered, variably-banked four corners of this week’s Fast Lap questions.
1)Â Will the 48 team continue their “race to win strategy” at Homestead or will they race for 18th?
2) Is Homestead the best place to finish the season?
3) Should Petty Enterprises merge/partner with Gillett-Evernham?
4) Will any of the three 2008 open wheel rookies not make it to the end of the season?
It’s Championship week ON PIT ROW. Give these babies your best and we may feature you on the show. We may also pillory you at the same time, but it’s all in fun. It’s the Fast Lap, ON PIT ROW and at the Thunder Lounge.Â
Quiet Fast Laps for those with a Texas sized hang over

November 6, 2007 10:36 am CST 2 CommentsWell I set my clocks back Saturday night, just like I was supposed to do. I guess I set them back about 25 hours too far though see’in’s how I’m about a day late with this post. I wasn’t even AT the Thunder Lounge last weekend. God bless those who were.
About the only way to stop Jimmy Johnson Sunday would have been to be in charge of his alarm clock. No such luck for Matt Kenseth, who drove the rubber off his used up tires trying to hold off Mr. Johnson.
Matt hung on for a well deserved second place. Martin Truex Jr shook whatever bad vibes have been surrounding the DEI stables and grabbed a nice third. Carl Edwards didn’t threaten anybody - he was probably too happy after finally clinching the anti-climactic and last Busch Series Championship. Congratulations Carl - I’m sure that Kenseth is very happy for you. Right.
And now to the meat of this sandwich - smoky hot barbecue please - the four fast flat corners of Phoenix International Raceway and this week’s Fast Lap questions.
1) Bruton Smith has purchased New Hampshire Speedway. Should NASCAR allow one of their races to move to Las Vegas?
2) Even though Jimmy Jonson won at Texas; was it a good decision to race Matt Kenseth for the win?
3) Who will do better in 2008; Junior at Hendricks or Kyle Busch at Gibbs?
4) What should NASCAR do to change the Busch (Nationwide) Series for 2008?
I know they’re a little late but pull the pillow off your head and jump in. we need content for our new blogger’s segment ON PIT ROW.
