Fast Laps in Florida are all that remain
by Charlie Turner
I'm Charlie Turner co-host of the syndicated, mostly NASCAR radio show On Pit Row. Thanks for stopping by OnPitRow.com and the Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie blog. Oh yeah, Steve is an idiot.

They say it isn’t over until the fat lady sings - that it ain’t over ’til it’s over. Where’s Stevie Nicks when you need her?Â
I know, Jeff Gordon still has a mathematical chance of catching Jimmy Johnson and capturing the last Nextel Cup Championship. This isn’t about arithmetic folks. Watching Johnson the last four weeks could deflate Al Gore at a PETA convention. It’s over.
Maybe someone different could win a race for a change though - like Smoke Stewart or somebody in a Ford. How about one of the Busch brothers - it is Florida after-all?
Maybe Dale Earnhardt Jr will make all happy -  steal one of Truex Jr’s cars -  and thwart the evil desires of Broomhilda.Â
I need a drink.  But first take a cruise on the multi-tiered, variably-banked four corners of this week’s Fast Lap questions.
1)Â Will the 48 team continue their “race to win strategy” at Homestead or will they race for 18th?
2) Is Homestead the best place to finish the season?
3) Should Petty Enterprises merge/partner with Gillett-Evernham?
4) Will any of the three 2008 open wheel rookies not make it to the end of the season?
It’s Championship week ON PIT ROW. Give these babies your best and we may feature you on the show. We may also pillory you at the same time, but it’s all in fun. It’s the Fast Lap, ON PIT ROW and at the Thunder Lounge.Â

1– They have to win the championship first. There is no way they can race for the win first and run the risk of blowing up the car. Once they have their 18th place sewn up–then they can go for the fifth win in a row.
2– Homestead is fine with me. it is one of NASCAR’s prerequisite 1 and a half milers. Most races are run on tracks this length, so its only fitting that they decide the champ on a mile and a halfer.
3– As much as I would hate to see the tradition af the Pettys change in any way–this is another step in keeping them in the sport. With the real probability that there will not be a Petty behind the wheel within 2 years; its essential to keep the team afloat. This is the best alternative.
4– My initial thought was that hornish would get discouraged and sulk back to the open wheels before the end of the season. But I think Jacques will be looking to own his team before the end of the season and if all is going well, he may “retire” from the driving and concentrate on the ownership end.
There you go–blast ‘em boys and girls.
Huh? Wattaya mean there’s only one race left? What the hell am I supposed to do? Watch rodeo?
1. Let me straighten out “Question Mark Face” first. The #48 team is not going to start running for 18th place so they can save their motors. You DECREASE YOUR MARGIN FOR ERROR by running closer to the challenger. An 18 place lead is better than a lesser lead. You want to run near the best cars and the best drivers - not the mid-pack loonies.
2. Homestead is an anti-climax. I would like to see a finish at Daytona. Or Texas, the parties are better, I hear.
3. Petty is a brand. The Pettys know that better than anyone. Hell the #43 was the FIRST Nascar brand. George Gillette’s company is a brand-building, sports-promotion monster. It would be a good thing.
4. I think Jacques is more interested, long term, in ownership. He is probably the most talented driver of the four - and they are all real good - but if one doesn’t finish, I think it is JV. I think Hornish will be the most successful. Did you notice that he has made both races since he finally made a comittment? He will start all the early races with the #2 champ points and has better equipment (and Roger Penske) than the other guys. Good question.
