I'm Charlie Turner co-host of the syndicated, mostly NASCAR radio show On Pit Row. Thanks for stopping by OnPitRow.com and the Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie blog. Oh yeah, Steve is an idiot.

The new car looked awfully squirrely at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Sunday. The current tire package seemed to keep these cars right on the very edge “whoa Nellie” the whole day.

For the second straight week, Cousin’ Carl Edwards owned the last 100 miles or so and led a relative parade of Fords including teammate Greg Biffle and Yates Racing’s Travis Kvapil. Kvapil’s sponsor-less, all white #28 sure looks strange out there, but after two straight strong runs, the colors ought to start popping soon.

Two nasty, hard crashes by Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon were a reminder that auto racing is still dangerous business. The new car and safety equipment may have prevented tragedy.

There were other issues, in and around the actual race and Steve and I will be fighting about some of them ON PIT ROW this week. Check out these four high banked lefties and show us what you got in the comment section.

1. Did NASCAR make the proper call on the #99 team’s pit infraction?

2. Is it time for Team Red Bull to pull the plug on A J Allmendinger?

3. Should the Coca Cola 600 or the Indy 500 move back to Memorial Day, so more drivers could attempt “the double”, or is that all just a stunt?

4. How can NASCAR inspectors allow the #48, #88 and #17 teams to “fix” minor problems after the cars failed pre-qualifying inspections, then go through inspection again without penalty?

Remember, this is the Fast Lap and your comments are limited to 100 words or less. So be fast and be prepared to come back throughout the week to defend yourself. Some of your fellow commenters just may bump draft you a little hard. We’ll use the best - or worst - stuff on a future broadcast of ON PIT ROW.

    *Sacks Up*

    1) I think so. Looking at the replays it shows it was something that was out of control of the team. It was just one of those freak things that happen on occasion.

    2) That’s what Skinner taking over the #84 says to me. It’s the right thing to do at the moment. Vickers in the #83 is making the shows, and running respectably. AJ has missed the first 3, although California can’t really be held against him since it was washed out.

    3) As it stands, or stood before Indy pushed back their start time an hour, it’s more of a personal accomplishment than anything. The publicity doesn’t hurt, either. If either were moved a day, then that kind of cancels the whole appeal of the double, doesn’t it?

    4) It’s a little early to say it’s without penalty, it’s not Wednesday yet. However, we also don’t know what specifically was wrong, either. There are a number of nit-picky, minor things that a car can get sent back through tech for, that end without penalty. It happens all the time. It’s the major stuff that really gets the attention. Whether it’s flared fenders, unapproved parts, unapproved noses, whatever. Going back through tech isn’t necessarily a guarantee of a penalty forthcoming.

    I’ll make these short.

    1) Yes
    2) Yes
    3) Yes they should, but not for the driver double but for the fan to have 1100 miles of racing in one day and yse it is just a stunt for most of them, but I believe for Tony Stewart when he did it, it was more personal than just a stunt.
    4) I agree with Luke, but I also think that if there are just minor things they should get sent back to be fixed without penality - but the real can of worms is, what is classified as a minor penality? The improper nose, or the improper angle of the rear wing? A loose lid on the oil cooler box, or a missing screw in a windshield clip?

For some reason I can’t leave a comment on your Bench Racing page, so I’ll answer your Buzz Question here.

Yes NASCAR should speed up the procces and they should lead the pack by doing their own (France Family) tracks first, like Dayotna.

1– Why was the camera man there to begin with. If he was in the way, the crew member should have moved him. Therefore my blame goes to the crew man. But NASCAR did get this right. Maybe they should use instant replay more often.

2– Skinner will be able to help figure out what is wrong. Whether it is the car, crew, chief or driver hopefully they can get themselves into races. Allmendinger did well in the second half of ‘07, so something has to be off and Skinner will be able to figure it out. I guess that leaves Johnny Benson to pilot the 27 the rest of the season.

3– Nobody would ever be able to win one of those races, if running both. Therefore it is just a circus sideshow. Move Indy back to Monday and let them run ‘em both if they want. But race both races to win; not to see if you can rehydrate yourself on the heli ride to the airport. That;s not what I want to see.

4– Inconsistency drives me nuts. If an infraction is so minor during pre-qualifying inspection that they can be returned to the line while making fixes, then any infraction before qualifying should be handled the same way. No harm–no foul.

I smell fear in this room.

    1. Did I ever tell you what Steve was doing when ON PIT ROW began? He was the “on air” camera expert on the morning radio show of our colleague Bill Clark. So it just sort of figures that my pal Steve-O - the “O” is for idiOt - would side with the FREAKIN’ CAMERAMAN in this instance. Unbelievable. What was the camerman doing there? He was taking video for the TV network and luckily there was another one right behind him taking video of him getting in the way of the Roush tire catcher. Did you even watch one of the FOUR HUNDRED replays that ran this week? I…. I’m running out of my 100 words. Yes. The answer is yes, they

    2. Ahem. The question is whether it is time to pull the plug on Allmendinger’s Red Bull ride. The answer is no. The team has competitive issues - all of the Toyota teams do, even the Gibbs guys - and Skinner should help them turn that car into a functioning Cup car. What we liked about Red Bull last year, when they started was the fact that they were building for the future with young, talented drivers instead of retreads. Red Bull management says AJ is still their guy. I believe them, as of today anyway.

    3. Separating the races so that they were on different days would make attempting the double no different than a Cup/Nationwide double weekend when the series are at different locations. The uniqueness would be gone. The beneficiary would be the IRL because they might temp some of NASCAR’s best - like Stewart, Robby, Hornish, Franchitti, et al - to come over and race. I’m not so sure that NASCAR wants to help their competition that much. The France’s had a backstage hand in wrecking open wheel racing in N. America and I don’t think they want to help put Humpty George back together again.

    4. How can NASCAR……? Who’s going to stop them? Live with it and move on ’cause it ain’t gonna change.

    Where’s my calculator?

Got something to say?
