Fast Laps on Steroids
by Charlie Turner
I'm Charlie Turner co-host of the syndicated, mostly NASCAR radio show On Pit Row. Thanks for stopping by OnPitRow.com and the Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie blog. Oh yeah, Steve is an idiot.

Well at least we know who won’t win the Sprint Cup. Michael Waltrip is officially elliminated, costing Buffy Waltrip uncalculated bucks. So too are Robby Gordon, Kasey Kahne and David Ragan. Ragan and Kahne were close to getting into the Brian France Invitational. Robby, sadly was not. So he’ll sue somebody. Like we need another law suit.
The most disappointing, and to me surprising failure was that of the Penske Racing teams. After Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch finished one-two at the season opening Daytona 500, they bombed. Oh, Kurt won a race on a roll of the dice, but other than that, nada.
Is the Chase a battle between NASCAR’s dynamic dozen or is it really just the big three and other nine? Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards are getting heat from two time defending Cup champ Jimmy Johnson. Who else really has a shot? Tune in Sunday to the track known widely as Martinsville on Steroids, for your first taste of the the 2008 Chase for the Sprint Cup. But first, try your wit at the ON PIT ROW Invitational - the Fast Lap.
1: Has Jimmy Johnson surfaced as the “man to beat” for the championship?
2: How will Dodge’s announcement to pull factory support from the Craftsman Truck teams affect the rest of their programs?
3: Is Tony Stewart trying to get released from Joe Gibbs Racing early by being a PITA and A-hole?
4: Robby Gordon or Gillett Evernham Motorsports?
That’s it. So what do you think? The Fast Lap is a comment blog and lately, we’ve been a little weak in the comment department. Give a brother a break. Tell me what you think. I promise not to treat you any worse than the Falcons treated my Lions yesterday. I think I’m gonna be sick.

Your Lions? I musta mised the news being all NASCAR-centric, when diud Bill |Ford sell-out?
1. J.J. man to beat? No, just one of three of four.
2. I’m guessing not much. Of course that’s looking thru a lens that shows… what the the hell have they done for the last two years. Sure, it could get worse but who cares, the sport survived without them before and will again if that’s what lays ahead.
3. No, Tony is being Tony when things aren’t up to his normally much higher standards.
4. Robby Gordon…. Pffftt Motorsports.
1: Has Jimmy Johnson surfaced as the “man to beat” for the championship?
Not the “man to beat”, but the “man you must contend with” is more like it - quite, but not quite.
2: How will Dodge’s announcement to pull factory support from the Craftsman Truck teams affect the rest of their programs?
Based on what I’ve heard Dodge isn’t done yet.
3: Is Tony Stewart trying to get released from Joe Gibbs Racing early by being a PITA and A-hole?
No. But I think there is more going on than what we were privy to and what the coach needs to do is sit them all - everyone who works on the 20 car from the head wrench to the guy who sweeps the floors - and give them the play-off speech.
4: Robby Gordon or Gillett Evernham Motorsports?
Really, what does it matter? I think the truth lies somewhere in between, but if you want to know who is going to win? GEM, they have deeper pockets and will last longer in the courts.
1: Man to beat? One of the men to beat would be more accurate. Does anyone realize the last driver not named Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, or Jimmie Johnson hasn’t won a race since Kurt Busch lucked into a win at New Hampshire in June?
2: The optimist in me says that’ll allow them to focus more on Sprint/Nationwide, but more than likely they’ll try to hang out in Cup for a while before dumping the program.
3: When is Tony not a PITA and A-hole? He probably isn’t trying to get released so much as he is just behaving the way he wants to and knows he won’t deal with any repercussions for doing so.
4: Gillett Evernham might have deeper pockets, but Robby has internet-savvy fans and will support him no matter what. I guess I’ll come down on GEM’s side.
1– Momentum is a great thing and nobody has more right now than JJ. I’ve said it all year that The Shrub was in the right place at the right time with his move to Gibbs. Now JJ has the stars lining up. JJ is the man to beat–hands down.
2– I don’t think Dodge will pull out of the other two series, but its time to either crap or go. Dodge needs to circle the wagons and get all their teams on the same page. Their re-entry was supposed to revolve around Evernham doing R&D and giving info to the rest of the teams with complete sharing back and forth. Its time for that model to come to fruition.
3– How many times have you heard this; That’s just Tony being Tony.” Maybe–but he is still being an Ass.
4– I’ll take Robby’s side. It looks as if GEM, and maybe George himself, was trying to get Robby to breach the agreement. Is this what we will see from our new investors? If so look out everybody–it’s going to get ugly.
