NASCAR Roots Racing Fast Laps at Martinsville
by Charlie Turner
I'm Charlie Turner co-host of the syndicated, mostly NASCAR radio show On Pit Row. Thanks for stopping by OnPitRow.com and the Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie blog. Oh yeah, Steve is an idiot.

I love Martinsville. Or maybe it’s just a short track hang-over from the ARCA Championship weekend at the equally short, and fun as hell, Toledo Speedway. At least it was fun for Steve and me. Don’t know about Scott Speed and Ricky Stenhouse Jr or any of the others who got their rides short-tracked to greater and lesser extents. I can tell you it was a blast to watch.
Congrats to Justin Allgaier for keeping his head on and winning the race and the ARCA RE/MAX Series championship. It’s on to the Nationwide Series in Penske Racing’s no. 12 and by the looks of Allgaier’s Friday showing at Lowes, he’ll do just fine.
Scott Speed had major short-track issues and may find a distinct lack of allies as he tries to make his Sprint Cup debut at Martinsville this weekend. Speed might want to tackles these four, tricky Fast Lap questions to work out some of his frustration, hmm?
1: NASCAR threw up a trial balloon at Lowes this week seeking reaction to shrinking the field size at all three series races, How will that help NASCAR?
2: While everyone else has moved up and down in the Chase standings, Johnson has held firm at the top. Can Burton or Biffle knock him out of the lead?
3: If one of the NASCAR axioms is that crew chiefs and drivers must have “chemistry”, what are teams hoping for with their “driver de jour” programs?
4: How might a GM-Chrysler merger affect NASCAR?
Go ahead. Show Speed how it’s done. Be assertive, but know your limits - 100 words or less - and don’t take any schtuff from your fellow Fast Lappers. We’re looking for the best for the new Fast Lap Show, coming to a blog near you.

First of all, it was great seeing Allgaier’s run to win the title. Speed and Stenhouse made for a show, but it was Allgaier winning the last 3 races of the year at 3 very different tracks to make a comeback. Congrats to him.
1: I guess it’s an idea given the economy, but what about when the economy rebounds? Expand it again? I wouldn’t have a problem making the Trucks something like 32, Nationwide 36, and Cup 40 for the time being. 28 and 36 seems quite small.
2: As I stated in my Chase column this week, I still think Biffle is the top contender to Johnson. I just think the races at Atlanta, Texas, Phoenix, and Homestead favor him more than Burton.
3: Simply put, a miracle. Sponsor pressure is behind some of the knee-jerk moves, not allowing chemistry to develop, so the revolving door continues. Obviously there are bigger problems with an organization than just chemistry when you’re hanging around 36th and back in the points to begin with. It’s something you usually can’t tackle until the offseason.
4: I think it would slowly bleed NASCAR of Dodge support, which seems to be waning anyway. GM won’t part with the Chevy label in racing as they absorbed Pontiac’s program into Chevy. Should such a merger happen it wouldn’t really influence things until a few years down the road - but things would change. Although at this point, nearly every Dodge team is going to Toyota anyway.
1. It won’t help NASCAR in any fashion whatsoever. That aside, that rumor, is patent BS.
2. No, it’s his to lose. Without someone playing bumper tag with the #48 or some mechanical ill befalling him Johnson will get his third crown.
3. Um… catching lightening in a bottle?
4. Kasey Kahne might actually win again? Penske switches to Toyota?
1– I can see the revival of the “start and park” group. That led to the start of the Top 35 rule anyhow. Morgan Shepherd returns to the Cup garage for “three laps and handling problems”.
2– Go Biff–go Biff–go go biff.
3– Makes no sense whatsoever. These guys either have no clue what they are looking to accomplish or they are just seeing what sticks after throwing anything at the wall. The relationship is paramount and sending driver after driver out to be humiliated is just plain stupid on all levels.
4– Short answer-if the merge-bye bye Dodge. As was said above; “they’re all going to ‘oya anyhow.
1: The field for the Truck race was already down. That horse has left the barn, don’t ya think? That said, I can’t see NASCAR mandating smaller fields in Cup. Maybe in Nationwide they would. In trucks, they may have trouble filling a 32 truck field at some races. What needs to be done, is increase the purse payouts.
2: They have to win races. To win the Chase you have to win races. More than they already have. Can they? I like Biffle’s chances more than Burton’s.
3: A miracle.
4: No more Dodge nameplate in the Series. But I think Chrysler is going to merge with Renault-Nissan, not GM.

” 4: No more Dodge nameplate in the Series. But I think Chrysler is going to merge with Renault-Nissan, not GM.”
In order to be fair, even though I am posting my comments weeks late - I tried to use the arguements that I used ON PIT ROW, the week these questions were posted. So, my Renault-Nissan merger comment looks as dumb as it turned out to be.
Now, I think the survivor will be GM. And I still think the Chargers and Avengers will be gone. But you might just see Dodge trucks “back” in the new Camping World Truck Series. Ram trucks are one of the seven products that GM is rumored to be keeping. They may just want to promote them too.
