I don’t know about you, but I’m crossing my fingers that the motors and the tires hold up for the whole 500 miles of the Kobalt Tools 500 this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It’s about time to see a full compliment of NASCAR’s best go at it on a really fast track. Lets find out where we are with this new car on the kind of track where most of the races are run.
Three of this weeks Fast Lap questions touch directly or indirectly on engine effected results from the last couple races. I think it’s time for some cheating. Maybe a nice, convoluted conspiracy theory. But that’s just me.
Just don’t bring up Digger. Please.
The Fast Lap Blog is going to go through some changes here shortly. We’ll still pose the four questions. And we, for sure, are hoping for spirited debate. But we’re going to put a couple more conditions on the answers you post. Stay tuned.
1: Could you see Kyle Busch moving to the US formula 1 team in 2010?
2: Would anyone other than Jimmie Johnson be allowed to return to the track with his rear bumper support dragging the asphalt?
3: Is NASCAR’s no testing policy starting to rear its ugly head with all the engine problems?
4: Will Mark Martin lose interest in the season if his season doesn’t improve in one helluva hurry?
There you have them. Four fast, southern flavored, high banked testers for ya. Leave your answers - 100 words or less (for now) - in the comment section. Then come back and defend yourself. You never know who might take umbrage to your opinions. We do like a good argument around here.

Kyle Busch won his fifth Sprint Cup contest of the season Sunday at Infineon Raceway. That gives him at least fifty bonus points in the Chase to the first Sprint Cup. That Chase starts after only ten more races. Not all that much time for the likes of Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle or other pretenders to the Cup to get on the board, get off the snide, break the ice - win something - and maybe just as importantly for Shrub haters, keep Kyle from winning everything in sight.
Some drivers need to win to keep their championship hopes alive. Others to keep their jobs. It was a matter of time before Casey Mears’ disappointing 2008 start began to dog him in the speculation department. One of the big Sonoma rumors was that Mears would be moved to create a seat in the #5 for Mark Martin, who may be moving out of the DEI stable to free a full-time seat for Aric Almirola.
The move would set Mark up for the first ever - Third Times a Charm Retirement Tour. The #5 team at Hendrick Motorsports should be better than anything that DEI is fielding these days and Mark can still drive. But would Mark Martin be any better than the fourth best driver in the Hendrick Motorsports stable today?
What do you think? And while you’re at it, give the four, flat, all left handed turns of this week’s Fast Lap some thought. Remember your answers are limited to 100 words or less. But come on back and defend your position later in the week. Defense is unlimited.
1. What happened to the boos when the Shrub won? Are California fans truly more mature than the rest of NASCAR Nation?
2. David Gilliland turned one good Busch Series finish into a full time Cup ride. Can he turn one good Cup finish into a career?
3. Does the future of the Wood Brothers lie in Marcos Ambrose’s hands?
4. Juan Pablo Montoya is quoted in the London Times saying that NASCAR is better than F1. On Sunday’s Wind Tunnel, Scott Speed said that NASCAR is much easier than F1. Who is right?
We have plans for the best responses. What those plans are, I can’t say. Trust me. Would I lie to you? O, and listen to the live streaming broadcast of ON PIT ROW Tuesday from 5-7 pm edt. It’s good for you and trans fat free.

Now the Hendricks Haters finally have something to focus on. Jimmy Johnson and Chad Knaus fueled the field, doing just enough to win the Subway Fresh Fit 500 and grab the first win of 2008 for the outfit that many look upon as the evil empire.
Speaking of evil - the recently evil handling new car looked pretty racy to me Saturday night. Three races and a few test sessions on the flat miler in the dessert paid dividends for drivers and fans of the Sprint Cup Series. Now if NASCAR would just set up some additional tests on the intermediate tracks, we might see better racing on those as well.
This would be the perfect time for just such testing, with an idle weekend on the Sprint Cup schedule this week. The Nationwiders are heading south - way south - to Mexico City and one of my favorite races to watch at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course.
While waiting for that action, and listening for private Sprint car testing news, try your digital hand at this week’s Fast Lap questions. Four turns, some left, some right. Put up your dukes, it’s debate time, ON PIT ROW style.
1. Is the anticipation at the end of a fuel mileage race as exciting as door-to-door racing at the end of an event?
2. Did FOX handle the overlapping baseball and racing coverage adequately?
3. Was NASCAR’s scheduled start time for the race at Phoenix too late?
4. Mark Martin said his crew chief didn’t know how much fuel he had saved during the end of the race. Should Martin have over-ridden the call from the pits to come and get fuel?
We look for the best Fast Lap comments to be used on a future broadcast of ON PIT ROW. Give it your best shot and you might just get a guest shot on the show, which can be heard online live right here on Tuesdays from 5-7 pm EDT and on re-broadcast at Race Talk Radio Thursday nights at 7 pm.
Remember the rules - comments are limited to 100 words or less, but there is no limit on attacking other commenters. Just be nice - like Jimmy Johnson.
